Dwarfs, River gods in Human Form and 7 other Weird Spiritual Activities we Expect to See at Asantehemaa’s Funeral

Asanteman is gearing itself up for the final funeral rites of the Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.

Almost all the monuments, roundabouts and ceremonial streets in the Garden City have been refurbished, while utility poles and trees on the main roads have been draped in red and black cloths, signifying that a big funeral is in the offing.

Large and colourful billboards of the late queenmother have also been erected at vantage points in the city, providing information about the funeral, which will start from December 1 to December 15, 2017.

Nana Serwaa Ampem, who is the biological mother of the current Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Queenmother, Nana Ama Konadu, died on November 14, 2016, at the age of 111.She reigned for 39 years and was buried at dawn in a full traditional ceremony at the Breman Royal Mausoleum (Ban mu) on January 20, 2017.

At such a funeral, we expect these rumoured activities, as culled from Kwabena Nsafoa. Note that most these are not facts; merely rumours that come up.

1. The batakari kese3 is the single most powerful attire

Asantehene in batakari kese3

Among the Akan these “war shirts” are called batakari, and the most powerful of these, as seen here, belong to Asantehene and is called batakari kese. This example is lavishly covered with both Koranic amulets and amulets more clearly rooted in indigenous belief systems (e.g. the leather covered gourds and animal horns). No longer worn in battle, these impressive garments are still worn at certain moments during a chief’s installation and at the funerals of other chiefs.

Thomas Edward Bowdich, the 17th century traveller, described their use as follows: “The most surprising superstition of the Ashantees is their confidence in the fetishes or saphies they purchase so extravagantly from the Moors, believing firmly that they make them invulnerable and invincible in war, paralyse the hand of the enemy, shiver their weapons, divert the course of balls, render both sexes prolific, and avert all evils but sickness, (which they can only assuage) and natural death.” (1819:271)

NsromaMedia.Com gathered that Asantehene’s batakari kese3 is spiritually charged by the Gonjas, Banda, Mossi.

2. During occasions like this, river gods like, Tano which used to be ‘kom’ Anokye, Offin and Bosomtwe appear in human form and go the Palace. They have several discussions with the custodian of the Asanteman.

3. After this occasion the newly enstooled queen swallows a magical stone ‘nyini ky3 bo)’ and sede3 which will give her elixir of life: long life. Did you hear of the rumour that the late Asantehemaa had swallowed a stone that allows her to grow old? Well, we expect same of the new one.

4. Spiritual realm, dwarfs will roam about in the Palace.
5. The chief priest of Asanteman, Sumankwahene will chant for it not to rain till the funeral is over. Have you ever seen it rain whiles Asantehene is sitting in state? Well, it is believed that Asanteman’s Sumankwahene is able to hold the rains up in the skies.

6. Only after the funeral that spiritually, the late will ‘ordain’ her successor. At the moment, the late Asantehemaa’s stool has not been darkened, until it is darkened, the new is spiritually ‘unknown’.

7. Visiting well wishers from other chieftaincy households, could spiritually tempt Opemso)..and that, his ‘ban b)’ is fortified in occasion like this. At this moment, not everything that will transpire could be interpreted and understood carnally. Other well wishers will definetly tempt Asantehene whiles they enter the palace. This is the moment for his protectors to be alert and watch over him. Though its a funeral but spiritually, its a challenge of powers.

8. Beside the glittering ornaments worn by Nananom, the dull ones are the real deal.
